I watch daily K-dramas for a reason. Most mainstream ones these days are polished to hell and start feeling empty after two episodes. You can read more about that in my editorial on why a lot of modern K-dramas don’t feel like K-dramas anymore. Daily dramas are different. They’re messy, often silly, full of unhinged substories and random moments that at least keep you watching. Yes, after a while you start skipping half the romance plots (especially when it’s another 50-something guy and some woman), but the chaos is usually there. Family Register opens with exactly that kind of energy. The setup is solid. Then it slowly loses the plot.

Crazy Love (2022) is one of those K-dramas that I really wish more people talked about. It aired in 2022, but somehow it feels like it never got the attention it deserved.

For me, this is one of my favorite romance dramas, and probably my favorite K-drama involving an amnesia storyline. It is also one of the funniest, craziest, and most unpredictable romances I’ve watched.

It has everything: romance, comedy, revenge, mystery, fake relationships, amnesia, workplace drama, emotional moments, and characters who seem to make the worst possible decisions at exactly the wrong time.

The Apartment Job is one of those dramas where I found myself thinking, “This could have been really good.”

The premise is genuinely unusual. A former gangster gets involved in a scheme to steal an enormous apartment reserve fund, only to become increasingly involved in the problems of the residents he originally intended to exploit. What begins as a potential heist gradually turns into a strange combination of mystery, comedy, crime drama, apartment politics, and found family.

Our Sticky Love is one of those K-dramas where the first episode makes you think you may have found something much more fun than what the rest of the series eventually delivers.

The premise certainly sounds promising: a prosecutor gets caught up with a dangerous gangster, survives an attack, and wakes up with amnesia. The man who saved her then claims to be her boyfriend and takes her back to his small hometown. From there, the drama mixes romance, comedy, crime, action, and a little bit of mystery.

The Judge from Hell was easily my favorite K-drama of 2024. I went into it expecting a fun supernatural crime drama, but what really hooked me was how different it felt from the standard K-drama formula. It has a strong female protagonist, a constantly changing set of cases, plenty of dark humor, and—thankfully—a romance that doesn’t take over the entire story.

In the final episode of Twin Peaks Season 2, Laura Palmer delivers the now-famous line, “I’ll see you again in 25 years.” Looking back, it almost feels like Mark Frost and David Lynch had been planning the continuation all along, as if they knew the series would become a cultural phenomenon that would linger in viewers’ minds for decades. More realistically, it may simply have been a remarkable coincidence, with the rise of streaming platforms and Hollywood’s hunger for established intellectual properties eventually giving television executives a reason to return to a series that had experienced both enormous acclaim and a painful downfall.

Alchemy of Souls is one of those Korean dramas that is difficult to describe with just one genre. It combines fantasy, romance, action, comedy, mystery, and elements of a historical drama, all inside a completely fictional world. The result is ambitious, visually impressive, and, despite some flaws, incredibly entertaining.

For me, Alchemy of Souls stands out as one of the most memorable Korean fantasy dramas I have watched. It is not perfect, and there are certainly moments when the story becomes repetitive or takes longer than necessary to move forward. But the combination of its imaginative world, charismatic characters, humor, romance, and emotional moments makes it an experience that is easy to get attached to.

Mr. Queen is one of those K-dramas that completely surprised me. I started watching it without expecting too much, especially because historical Korean dramas are not usually the genre that keeps me interested for very long. Somehow, however, Mr. Queen managed to combine history, fantasy, romance, comedy, action, and political intrigue in a way that kept me watching until the very end.

I rarely finish a K-drama once it reaches the later episodes. If the story becomes repetitive or predictable, I usually lose interest. That was not the case with Mr. Queen. I watched all 20 episodes, and by the end, I understood why so many viewers consider this drama something special.

The Fallen Leaf is one of those dramas that is difficult to rate simply. It is messy, melodramatic, uncomfortable, occasionally absurd, and sometimes frustrating—but it is also emotionally intense, visually beautiful, and impossible to dismiss.

At its core, the series is a story about trauma, identity, family rejection, revenge, and, ultimately, learning to live with yourself. It deals with gender identity, transgender identity, domestic abuse, infidelity, mental illness, suicide, discrimination, and complicated family relationships. None of these subjects are particularly light, and The Fallen Leaf does not exactly approach them with subtlety. Yet beneath all the melodrama is a surprisingly thoughtful story about what happens when unresolved childhood trauma follows someone into adulthood.

The COVID-19 pandemic all but pushed the apocalypse genre out of television. The reason was obvious enough: people had little appetite for stories that felt uncomfortably close to reality. The Italian-French series Anna revives the post-apocalyptic narrative, but does so from an entirely different angle. Beneath its survival story lies a deeply philosophical premise built around one crucial twist: the only people left alive are children.

Somewhere beyond the mainstream television landscape, creators still make shows like Anna. It’s difficult to imagine anything remotely comparable emerging from today’s Ukrainian television industry. Among the country’s largest broadcasters and production companies, the idea of backing a project this uncompromising feels almost unimaginable. Their schedules remain dominated by safe, formulaic programming designed to satisfy the broadest possible audience.
