Asian TV series and the trend for easy viewing

Over the last few years, one trend has become hard to ignore: people are increasingly turning to easy viewing — shows that are simple to watch, emotionally warm, and not too exhausting.

Instead of politics, violence, or complicated moral conflicts, these shows usually focus on:

romance
friendship and family
character relationships
cozy settings
escapism

This is one reason Korean, Chinese, and Thai dramas have become so popular outside Asia.

At the same time, Hollywood has been taking a different route: bringing back old shows and franchises that people already know.

The Fallen Leaf is one of those dramas that is difficult to rate simply. It is messy, melodramatic, uncomfortable, occasionally absurd, and sometimes frustrating—but it is also emotionally intense, visually beautiful, and impossible to dismiss.

At its core, the series is a story about trauma, identity, family rejection, revenge, and, ultimately, learning to live with yourself. It deals with gender identity, transgender identity, domestic abuse, infidelity, mental illness, suicide, discrimination, and complicated family relationships. None of these subjects are particularly light, and The Fallen Leaf does not exactly approach them with subtlety. Yet beneath all the melodrama is a surprisingly thoughtful story about what happens when unresolved childhood trauma follows someone into adulthood.

Fast & Feel Love (2022) Review: When Chasing Your Dream Costs You Time

The film is packed with references to movies like Parasite by Bong Joon Ho. The music, editing, and even some of the camera angles deliberately recreate one of Parasite’s most iconic scenes. Even the title and poster design parody Fast & Furious, turning it into Fast & Feel Love.

The entire movie is essentially a parody of Fast & Furious—its over-the-top heroics, constant speeches about family, and dramatic emotional beats. The ending is a direct visual and emotional homage to the final scene of Furious 7, where Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Conner drive off in different directions at a crossroads. Here, Kao and Jay part ways in much the same fashion. They still respect each other, but their lives are heading down different roads. It transforms what begins as a ridiculous comedy into something unexpectedly heartbreaking.
